It's not too shabby, either. There were also reports that the ending needed to be reshot because it was too similar to that of Captain Marvel, but Deadline insists that no one involved with Phoenix's production knew what that Disney-owned movie entailed before it was released in March of this year. Kinberg, a longtime writer and producer of Fox's Marvel adaptations, was "flexible" and reworked the script, but even then, there were problems.įor instance, one of the cuts featured a more "intimate ending with Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), and Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) against Jessica Chastain’s Vuk." In another version, Jean outright died. These things didn't sit well with test audiences who wanted an all-out battle with the team we've grown to know and love.Īfter all, Kinberg has stated in the past that this movie was always meant to wrap up the last two decades (well, almost two decades) of X-features. According to the report, Dark Phoenix was originally going to be two separate movies before the studio decided to condense it into a single one. In a deep-dive story about what may have gone wrong with the Simon Kinberg-helmed project, Deadline points toward certain factors like major reshoots and the release date being pushed twice - once from November 2018 to February 2019, and then from February 2019 to June 2019. WARNING! The following contains certain plot spoilers for Dark Phoenix. ![]() ![]() SFGate reports that currently, local ordinance allows real-time access "only if there is a serious risk of physical injury or death." The new proposal would expand this field to "crimes such as retail theft, rioting, looting and drug-dealing." Now, both Breed and Jenkins support a proposal to the Board of Supervisors that would give law enforcement real-time access to surveillance cameras, including those owned by individuals or businesses, like Ring or competitor Google Nest. After the city recalled its progressive district attorney last month, Mayor London Breed appointed Brooke Jenkins as the interim replacement. Not to be outdone, San Francisco is taking things a step further. And as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) pointed out, "there is no process for a judge or the device owner to determine whether there actually was an emergency." Given the number of police agencies in the program, this is a fairly insubstantial percent of the total, but it's also only for a single year the company did not provide totals for any previous year. Ed Markey (D–Mass.), Amazon admitted that so far in 2022, " in response to an emergency request," Ring provided customer footage to law enforcement 11 times. In fact, in a July 1 response to questions from Sen. While Ring's Terms of Service stipulate that it will only furnish content to law enforcement, for example, "if legally required to do so" or to "comply with applicable law, regulation, legal process or reasonable preservation request," Amazon's Law Enforcement Guidelines state that it "reserves the right to respond immediately to urgent law enforcement requests for information in cases involving a threat to public safety or risk of harm to any person." The Law Enforcement Request form on Amazon's website even includes a bright red "Submit Emergency Request" button. But as it turns out, that may not always be true.Įarlier this month, The Verge reported that despite Ring's assurances, police can access users' stored footage without the customer's permission or even a warrant. Ring's website stresses that it is the customer's choice whether or not to turn over the footage in response to a request. Using the Neighbors app, police are able to request access to customers' video footage to aid in investigations. Ring has also partnered with over 2,000 police departments across the country. Customers can share camera footage or safety alerts with other nearby Ring users. ![]() ![]() We cannot support the common thought that it is a book club indicator. However, many people write and ask what the "W" means on their later printing copies. The first edition does not have a "W" on the copyright page. Earlier book club editions (BCEs) do have the desired photograph on the rear panel, but the books are thinner and of cheaper material and of at least three different cover designs. The BOMC does NOT have the Capote photograph of Lee on the rear panel. BOMC issues of Mockingbird have the same green cloth backing and brown-papered boards as the trade editions, but the well-known BOMC indentation is added to the back cover. One of these was the Book-of-the-Month Club (BOMC), which differs from other book clubs by producing books of the same quality and design as the trade editions. In 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird was issued by at least four book clubs. While the stated second printing dust jackets have the Daniels review, we have found that the stated third printing jackets have the Grau/McGinley reviews. Jonathan Worth Daniels was hardly obscure. He also served as press secretary for Franklin D. Jonathan Worth Daniels was an author and an outspoken supporter of civil rights. Rather, the review was written by Jonathan Worth Daniels, who at the time was the editor of the Raleigh News and Observer. The Jonathan Daniels who wrote the dust jacket review was not Jonathan Myrick Daniels, the Episcopal seminarian killed for his civil rights work in 1965. ![]() This is supported by the fact that the Grau review returns to the back flap, and the McGinley review to the front flap of the seventh printing. So it raises questions of the why the publisher would change blurbs from two well known authors to one lesser known minister. The case for the Daniels state being first is that normally blurbs for a first book progress from obscure reviewers to more famous ones as a book becomes more popular. Also, an early advertisement establishes that Grau and McGinley read advance copies and "poured out their enthusiasm. The case for the Grau/McGinley state being first is that the Grau and McGinley reviews were replaced by the Daniels blurb on the stated second printing of the dust jacket. There has been significant debate about the order of the states. They are identical except for the back flap reviews. They both have the author's photo on the back panel. Both states have the Capote blurb in green, the $3.95 price, and no printing statement on the front flap. The other state dust jacket has a single Jonathan Daniels review, and we have seen many of these. Obtaining a plumb, level wall, while working against built-up moldings, must have been difficult. Generally the woodwork was prime-painted before plastering. In early America, the windows, doors, and all other trim were installed before the plaster was applied to the wall. Not only did the basic plastering material change, but the method of application changed also. Gypsum and lime plasters were used in combination for the base and finish coats during the early part of the 20th century gypsum was eventually favored because it set more rapidly and, initially, had a harder finish. Manufacturing changes at the end of the 19th century made it possible to use gypsum as a plastering material. The lime came from ground-and-heated limestone or oyster shells the aggregate from sand and the fiber from cattle or hog hair. Lime plaster was made from four ingredients: lime, aggregate, fiber, and water. Until the end of the 19th century, plasterers used lime plaster. Plasterers in North America have relied on two materials to create their handiwork–lime and gypsum. Old plaster walls, like this one painted a faded red in a Greek Revival mansion in upstate New York, have a textural, handmade quality that modern materials can’t match. While minor repairs can be undertaken by building owners, most repairs will require the assistance of a plasterer. Plastering is a skilled craft, requiring years of training and special tools. To repair plaster, a building owner must often enlist the help of a plasterer. This system is generally better suited to historic preservation projects than dry wall. Veneer systems include a coat or coats of wet plaster–although thinly applied–which can, to a greater extent, simulate traditional hand-troweled or textured finish coats. Thus, a veneer plaster system is discussed rather than dry wall. Finally, this Brief describes a replacement option when historic plaster cannot be repaired. Dry wall repairs are not included here, but have been written about extensively in other contexts. The approaches described in this Brief stress repairs using wet plaster, and traditional materials and techniques that will best assist the preservation of historic plaster walls and ceilings–and their appearance. For both reasons, plaster walls and ceilings contribute to the historic character of the interior and should be left in place and repaired if at all possible. Plaster can also serve as a plain surface for irreplaceable decorative finishes. ![]() Of more concern to preservationists, however, original lime and gypsum plaster is part of the building’s historic fabric–its smooth troweled or textured surfaces and subtle contours evoke the presence of America’s earlier craftsmen. A building owner needs to think carefully about the condition of the plaster that remains plaster is often not as badly damaged as it first appears. It resists fire and reduces sound transmission. First, three-coat plaster is unmatched in strength and durability. But there are practical and historical reasons for saving it. Historic plaster may first appear so fraught with problems that its total removal seems the only alternative. This variety and the adaptability of the material to nearly any building size, shape, or configuration meant that plaster was the wall surface chosen for nearly all buildings until the 1930s or 40s. Plaster could be treated in any number of ways: it could receive stenciling, decorative painting, wallpaper, or whitewash. It provided a durable surface that was easy to clean and that could be applied to flat or curved walls and ceilings. Technical Preservation Services (TPS), Heritage Preservation Services Division, National Park Service prepares standards, guidelines, and other educational materials on responsible historic preservation treatments to a broad public.Ī versatile material, plaster could be applied over brick, stone, half-timber, or frame construction.
